What is Finasteride?
- Finasteride is used to treat male pattern baldness. It helps prevent further hair loss, as well as hair regrowth. It can also treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as difficulty starting to urinate, feeling the need to urinate urgently or more often and struggling to fully empty the bladder.
- It works by lowering levels of a natural hormone, which helps slow hair loss and may encourage hair regrowth.
- Finasteride is not suitable for women or children.
- Pregnant women must not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets, as the medication can be absorbed through the skin and may harm an unborn baby.
- It is important to read the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects and precautions.
How Does Finasteride Work?
Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor most commonly used to treat male pattern baldness, which causes hair loss at the crown and the middle of the scalp. By reducing levels of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), it can slow hair loss and promote regrowth. It does not affect hair growth on other areas of the body.
It can also be used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. The prostate is a gland located near the bladder. When it becomes enlarged, it can press on the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body, making it harder to urinate. DHT also contributes to prostate enlargement. Lowering DHT levels helps shrink the prostate, easing symptoms.
